Trains are fast, clean and on-time in Japan. In fact, since first coming here sixteen years ago, I’ve found it hard to get on trains on many other countries and feel as happy as I do when I’m riding them in Japan.
Trains and stations in Japan also make for excellent photographic subject-matter. The shinkansen [bullet-train] platforms in Tokyo, for instance, have a platform ticket you can buy for 160¥ which gives you two hours to wander around. I often take my photography students there as the platforms are a great place to shoot a set of narrative pictures.
This is an old gallery but it gives you some idea of some of my fascination for trains in Japan.
